All of the great white sharks mysteriously vanished from the coastal waters around Cape town in South Africa. Scientists have no idea of the reasoning behind the disappearance but they do have a few leads.
Photographer Chris Fallow, who shot some of the most iconic photographs of great white sharks, said he used to see 250-300 great whites every year, and now there’s not a single one in sight. This is really putting a spin on scientists, they have no thought of who or what is behind this and arguments are starting to occur in basic conversations.
Alison Kock, a marine biologist, said she had gotten her first clue in early 2015 when local divers sent her pictures of smaller shark carcasses on the sea floor with mysterious incisions. People asked her about it and she said “It looked so surgical from the photographs that I first assumed it must have been done by somebody with a knife.” Later she and her colleagues had gone diving themselves for more evidence and had found an unguessed suspect. Two Orcas, also known as killer whales, swam under their boat exactly where the small carcasses were seen.
They ignored the orcas and didn’t pay attention to it because they came to the conclusion that it wasn’t the orcas, but now that all the great whites have vanished they’re wishing they would’ve looked into it more as it could have lead to something that can help them figure out what is behind the vanishing of all the great white sharks.
South Africa started to protect the species in 1991, but now that they have vanished the people are starting to worry about South Africa being the first to lose the population and start the chain of extinction.
