The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway for crude oil & refined products, dry & bulk chemicals, as well as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). It is a very important chokepoint that connects the oil-rich countries of the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world. About 20% of the world’s oil and 20% of its natural gas passes through the Strait.
U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran since Feb. 2026 have raised concern about oil and natural gas markets in relation to the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices have soared in price since the conflicts. On Apr. 13, 2026, U.S. forces began to blockade Iranian ports after President Trump vowed to block “any and all ships from trying to enter, or leave” the strait. The White House says it wants to choke off Iran’s main source of revenue, oil exports, by cutting the country off from global maritime trade, which accounts for an estimated 90% of its economy.
The strategic importance of this waterway is defined by its role as the world’s most significant oil transit chokepoint. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), there are limited alternative routes capable of handling the volume of petroleum that passes through the passage daily. While pipelines exist in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to bypass the strait, their combined capacity is currently insufficient to replace the volume transported by tankers.
Historically, any increase in regional tension leads to immediate fluctuations in global energy markets. Increased insurance rates for maritime shipping and spikes in crude oil futures often occur when the security of the strait is perceived to be at risk. Because of the high volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil involved, the stability of the Strait of Hormuz remains a primary focus for international trade and global energy security.
