32-year-old Maria Florinda RIos Perez de Velasquez was fatally shot in the head, 20 miles from Indianapolis, when she mixed up the addresses and tried to enter the wrong house to clean.
On November 5, just before 7am, Indianapolis woman Maria Florinda went to clean a house when she mixed up the addresses and attempted to enter the wrong house along with her husband to clean. The homeowner Curt Anderson mistook their attempts to enter as a burglary and fatally shot Maria Florinda in the head. In his statement the homeowner says he acted in self defense and that they were ‘thrusting’ at the door. 2 weeks after the incident the court convicted Curt of voluntary manslaughter.
Maria’s husband Mauricio Perez-Velasquez said in his statement “I never thought it was a shot, but I resized when my wife took two steps back, she looked like she’d be hit in the head. She fell into my arms, and I saw the blood. It went everywhere.” And Curt Andersons attorney said they are “disappointed” by the decision to file criminal charges and “look forward to proving in court that his actions were fully justified by the castle doctrine provision of indianas self defense law.” While the Velasquez attorney thinks justice should be brought and he should face the charges so no other family should go through what Maria’s children and husband are going through. Their attorney also said “She was a mother, wife, a sister, and a valued member of her community. Her life was taken in a manner that should never happen in any neighborhood in Indiana.”
