On January 23rd, at the Cabin Park Boat Launch around 4:30 PM, a mom of twin boys had attempted to save her other 2 kids after they had fallen through the ice in the Susquehanna River, trying to save their dog who had wandered onto the ice.
By the time emergency services arrived, it was about 5 PM and the bystanders had already gotten the kids out before the fire department had gotten there. The fire department didn’t want to risk any of their guys falling through the ice or any getting hurt trying to get the kids to solid ground while they could easily avoid it, so to prevent that when they arrived, they tried launching a boat but were not successful due to the ice covering the river.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, it was too late. Officials noticed the dog under the ice soon after and claimed that the kids were attempting to rescue it. Later in the week, animal rescue units had to come out again to take a husky and a horse from the frozen Susquehanna River.
The emergency units called out were unit 57, chief unit 57, and MICU unit 90-2. Even as the animal rescue units were not called out for the dog, there had been another incident that they were also too late to respond to. They ended up getting called in later in the week for a husky and a horse that had fallen through the frozen Susquehanna River. Though the emergency units did arrive, they were still too late, and the mom ended up having a very upsetting day with her kids and had an unexpected tragic loss in her life. She had gone on the vacation to have a fun time with her family but in the end, she had gone home to a funeral for her own two kids.
