This year in Pennsylvania the winter forecast is supposed to be colder than usual. Some places will potentially get more snow than normal.
The weather for Thanksgiving this year is supposed to be colder than average however there is most likely going to be sunny skies during the holiday. A quote from the Farmers Almanac says “temperatures slip from mild early to chilly by the holiday, but skies stay bright and dry.”
The first day of winter is Sunday Dec. 21, 2025, 10:03 am EST. However some places like Erie and Pittsburgh could possibly see snow as early as Nov. 9. Another quote from the Farmers Almanac says that winter is predicted to be “mostly mild-with pockets of wild.” The coldest temperatures are most likely to be mid December to early February, possibly the beginning of March as well. The most snow that we will receive should arrive in late December to late January, early and late February and mid March. According to the almanac there may be more snow in Pittsburgh this year than average.
People also have theories about ways to predict how harsh winter will be. One of these theories is that wooly bear caterpillars can tell you how winter is going to be based on how much black is on the caterpillar. They say that if there is more black than brown then it is going to be a harsher winter. However this is not scientifically accurate.
