The famous editing app CapCut was banned on January 19th along with the social media app TikTok.
CapCut and TikTok are owned by the same parent company, ByteDance. The U.S government had become alarmed about the national security fears that TikTok and CapCut imposed. The government found issues within CapCut like national security and data privacy concerns which were linked to the ByteDance. ByteDance failed to divest its U.S assets by the deadline, leading to the app’s removal. Along with TikTok CapCut is currently “temporarily banned.” Many believe that CapCut will become permanently banned.
Following this CapCut ban the widely known social media app, Instagram, now has new video editing features. Instagram has updated their video editing skills in order to make up for the recent CapCut ban. Instagram has now shifted from prioritizing short-form videos content to embracing more long-form videos. Many TikTok users shifted to Instagram following the TikTok ban, because of this instagram was forced to update/change to accommodate the incoming users.
CapCut is not only banned in America, other countries have become concerned with security fears the app imposed. India and Afghanistan have also banned the app for the same reasons the U.S government did. TikTok is also banned in Afghanistan. In April of 2022, a spokesman for the taliban government stated that the app will be banned for “misleading the younger generation.” Since these apps have been banned many CapCut and TikTok users have now moved to the new Chinese app Rednote because of its likeness to the apps. Rednote seems to impose even bigger privacy concerns for its users. Not much has come out about the “new TikTok app” Rednote.
Many countries across the globe have recognized that the Chinese apps TikTok and CapCut impose major privacy concerns for their users, therefore resulting in the apps ban.
