Once you’re at the age of 18 you are open to many opportunities. Some of these opportunities include: being able to buy lottery tickets, donate blood, buy fireworks and so much more. The most important opportunity though, is being able to vote. Voting is very important because the candidate that eventually gets chosen is the one who is in charge.
Congress has been discussing lowering the voting age to 16. To me, there are many problems with this idea. Some of which can have a major impact on our world and communities. If someone votes for a candidate who does not care about what happens and does not think about the consequences to their actions, then we would be in more trouble than you would think. For example, look at our president now, Joe Biden, he doesn’t even have a clue as to what he is doing or why. It has gotten to a point where there are several problems and no one is doing anything about them.
There are two ways people go about voting. The first way is where the person votes based on how their candidate acts, dresses, thinks, and their beliefs. Now, there are more factors than just those four I listed but those are just the main ones. The second way people vote is based on their family and friends’ opinions. If your whole family is republican with the exception of a few democrats then you too will be republican and vice versa. This kind of impact is one of the reasons why we are separated from others. What I mean by that is people pick sides based on these factors and refuse to get along just because of their parties.
The human brain does not become fully developed until it is in its mid-20s, which is when the prefrontal cortex is developed. This part of the brain is one of the last to fully develop. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and making good decisions. Because of this, teens will get swayed more towards voting based on family and friends’ influence rather than their own opinion of the candidate. If more and more people go based off of this then we could have more and more horrible presidents as well as consequences. I think that the character of a person is more important than the group they associate with.
Most of the people who voted for Joe Biden were either under the influence of family and friends’ or just not all with it at that time. One example of this is, one of my family members who voted for Biden just because he was a democrat and “not Trump”. This choice just shows how some people vote for a candidate just because of the party or group they are in. It is kind of sad how no one thinks about what consequences will happen when their candidate they voted for is in office.
A couple of these consequences are, a raise in gas prices, people getting lazier by the day, inflation on everything everywhere, and a border crisis that nobody is fixing. This is not what America should stand for.
