TikTok users have been panicking because last Wednesday, the licensing agreement that allowed music under UMG to be used on TikTok expired. Before this decision, UMG had been pressing TikTok on three things: compensation for their artists and songwriters, protecting artists from AI song writing, and the overall safety of TikTok users. UMG said that TikTok was going to pay its artists and songwriters a fraction of the rate that other major platforms, including that TikTok only makes up only one percent of its revenue. UMG also voiced their concern for TikTok’s promotion of AI, which puts actual artists at risk, along with what the app flags as hate speech, bigotry, bullying and harassment. TikTok denied these claims saying, “It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.” Many people are worried that TikTok will never get its music back, but experts note that a negotiation between UMG and TikTok could happen at any moment. Former president of UMG said, “we’ve seen this movie before. It’s a wonderful, theatrical stand-off between two very major corporations who are wanting to assert their authority on the landscape.” While music is gone for now, it will surely change soon.
