MLB Updates Double Header Protocol

MLB Updates Double Header Protocol

Elijah Christian, Writer

The MLB has changed the rules for double headers to make the games shorter and to fit more
games in. The MLB started the season later on than it was supposed to because of COVID-19. They
lost a lot of time to play so had to find a solution to make up for lost time. Since double headers
in the MLB take so long especially since one game took around three hours to complete.
With the MLB changing the rules with the seven inning rule which would save time. The average
inning would be from 10 to 20 minutes in a regular nine inning game. That all depends on the
pitcher and if the batter hits the ball. It depends on that and other things that could happen. With
double headers being seven innings would that make the game less entertaining?
There was also another rule that was added if they would go into extra innings. If they were to
go into extra innings in a double header, there would be a free runner on second base to
hopefully make the game go quicker. Having a runner on second base is a key play in baseball
because that is a good scoring position for the runner. Which could make the game more
interesting but would it give the team on the field a fair chance.
The changes they made in the MLB for double headers should make up time. Since the seven
inning games should be about two to two and a half hour games. Which is a big difference in time for
a game and would allow for the players not to be fully exhausted for the next game.
