This school year, the Spring Grove Area School District is cracking down as they release a new cell phone policy. The policy prohibits the use of cellular devices during instructional time.
The first time a student violates this policy they receive a warning, the second time the student’s parent or guardian is notified, and the third time the student receives a lunch detention. This information can be found in the student handbook policies 237, and 815.
If a student receives a referral, the device is confiscated; the parent/guardian must pick up the device. The student will be subject to progressive disciplinary action (detention, behavior modification plans, in-school suspension, out of school suspension, etc.). (Student handbook policy’s #815 and #237)
When interviewed
A poll found that most teachers are for the cell phone policy, and most students are against the cell phone policy.
In an interview, Ms. Kraft, a teacher at Spring Grove high school said, “Love it, the kids seem more engaged” in response to the question, “What are your thoughts on the cell phone policy?”.
Gavin, a Spring Grove high school senior, was also interviewed. When asked the same question his opinion differed, as he said, “I don’t think it’s been that bad of an issue in the past three years of high school. There are things you can access on a phone that you can not access on an iPad. Phones can affect the quality of your work as well.”
Both parties are just as passionate about the cell phone policy. The students seem to believe the cell phone policy was a bad idea, while the teachers seem to think the cell phone policy was a great choice.
