I recently asked my mom, Ann Wilt, some questions about her journey as a nurse. Ann originally had no idea what she wanted to go to college for. She took a year off after she graduated and did not start college until she was 19. She went to York College. She went into college with an education major. She was going to college to become a secondary education math teacher.
It wasn’t until her junior year of college that she made the decision to change her major. It was just a normal day until Annie’s father was rushed to the ICU for a heart attack. As Annie watched the nurses take care of him she realized that she also wanted to be able to take care of her father like that. Both her parents were aging and she realized that she wanted to be the one to be able to take care of them. That is the day when she decided to change her major from education to nursing. She was around the age of 22 when this occurred.
She did not want to pursue a medical degree; she wanted to be right at bedside helping, which is what nurses do. She pursued her nursing career after she spent four years obtaining her Bachelors in nursing and then going back to obtain her Masters in nursing. She then took it a step further and became a nurse practitioner. She went into geriatrics and now works in many nursing homes to provide care for her patients. She takes rounds of her residents and sees them for routine visits. She also sees them for any acute illnesses or any change in condition. She also treats them and sends them to the ER if needed and is able to prescribe any medication/narcotics.
She wants everyone to know that it is okay to not know what you want to do. It s okay to be confused and scared about your future. If you keep you head down and work hard, things will workout for you.
