Mac Miller’s album Balloonerisms released on Jan 17, 2025 exactly five years after his first posthumous album circles alongside a short film based off the album. Balloonerism is a dark experimental 13 track album with songs like “5 Dollar Pony Rides” “Rick’s Piano” and “Funny Papers” is his 2nd posthumous album. Balloonerisms sold 81k first week sales and debuted at No.3 on billboard 200. Popular music reviewer and YouTuber Anthony Fantano said “very impressed and surprised with how great this project came out. Especially again given how mid most posthumous records are. Which is why I’m feeling a decent to strong 8 on this one.” Northern Transmissions gave the album a 9.
Balloonerisms was recorded in 2014 between Watching Movies with the Sound Off and faces with some songs from the album being put faces Mac had tracklists and commissioned cover art for the album but never released it. Shangri-La and Rick’s piano are from when Mac drunk dialed Rick Ruben and went to Ruben’s studio called Shangri-La where he rehabbed and made music at. Rick’s piano was originally supposed to be called Rick Ruben’s piano. The song Transformations features one of Mac Miller’s alter egos named Delusional Thomas the album also was primarily handled under his producer name Larry Fisherman. On Funny Papers Mac Miller said “somebody died today, I saw his picture in the funny papers. didn’t think anybody died on a Friday.” The line hit many of Mac’s fans hard because Mac died on Friday September 7 2018.
There was a rumor that went around that Mac Miller had saved that album and wanted it released after he died but that was never confirmed. It’s noted there had been when the album would be released when Mac was alive.
