With December right around the corner, Americans all over the US are gearing up for the festive season by putting up household decorations. For some, this starts incredibly early, and for others, it’s very last minute. This poses the question: when does the Christmas season really start?
First, some US statistics. According to architecturaldigest.com, around 54% of Americans set up their Christmas tree in November, 42% set it up in early December, and 5% set it up in late December. Americans are also more prone to favor an artificial tree, with a statistic of 66% of them preferring it to a real tree. As for Christmas music, 43% of Americans start listening in November, 31% start listening in early December, and 8% start listening in late December. This data suggests that most Americans don’t get in the Christmas spirit until late November/early December.
Now, let’s hear from some Spring Grove students and parents. When polled on the Rocket Star Instagram, the results somewhat mirrored results from the architecturaldigest.com polls, though the questions were somewhat different. 32% of voters said that they start decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving, 52% said they decorate the day after Thanksgiving, 16% said they start decorating around Dec 1, and 0% said that they decorate at the very last minute. The poll for artificial trees vs real trees was 70% to 30%, in favor of artificial trees. As far as Christmas music goes, 26%of the respondents said they start listening Dec 1, 22% said they start before Thanksgiving, 48% start right after Thanksgiving, and 4% said they listen all year round.
Across the country, and our very own school, the results of the polls varied. Some people like to begin Christmas early, while others like to wait until it is right around the corner. So, despite all of these polls, the question still stands: when does the Christmas season really start?
