2024-25 Winter Weather
With winter just around the corner, you might be wondering what the weather might be like. Winter 2024-25 might be similar to last year with some differences. Meteorological winter begins on Sunday, Dec. 1.
Last year was the warmest winter on record. How does that compare to this year? This winter will be similar to last year but not as warm. We are supposed to have a wet winter. Meteorologists are saying that this winter is supposed to be “cold, wet, and white.” A quote from a Penn Live article states, “According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this winter will be “wetter-than-average” for most of the northern part of the United States.”
Why will it be wetter this year? Well this year will be wetter because of La Ninã. La Niña is a cooling of the water in the equatorial Pacific, which occurs at irregular intervals, and is associated with widespread changes in weather patterns complementary to those of El Niño, but less extensive and damaging in their effects.
What about 2025? A quote from USA Today says “The end of January gets a red flag for much of the nation due to the potential of “a very active storm track” expected to bring strong and gusty winds, along with heavy precipitation – “copious amounts of snow, rain, sleet, and ice (depending on where you live) could fall,” A quote from AccuWeather says, “Based on data from previous winters with a similar setup to the upcoming season, Pastelok said that February is the most probable time frame for the polar vortex to usher a blast of bitterly cold air across the eastern U.S., but added that it is not a certainty.” Towards the middle/end of winter is when we are getting the most snow. Winter 2024-2025 will be wet and we will get more snow in January and the end of winter.
