On Wednesday April 24th, 2024 the House passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year. They are still trying to sell it to a U.S company to protect our information, and if they don’t sell it we won’t have the app next year. Many people that are trying to save Tik Tok say“ The president would rather spend its time, money, and effort fighting in court than solving the problem by breaking up the CCP with Tik Tok.” Biden then signed into law the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which is an effective ban or forced sale of TikTok from its parent company ByteDance. ByteDance instead offers Chinese users Douyin, a similar video-sharing app that follows Beijing’s strict censorship rules. TikTok also ceased operations in Hong Kong after a sweeping Chinese national security law took effect. But even though Biden signed it into law, don’t expect the app to go away anytime soon.
