You might have seen the Colorguard performing with the marching band at football games, but many people don’t really know much about the sport. Every year, sign-ups are posted around the school in October. This year there are 9 people in the Colorguard. The three weapons used in the sport are flags, rifles, and sabres. Our coach is Kaytelyn Naglich, and assistant coaches Tyler Crushong and Kiannah Klocek. Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm. The coaches pick the music and theme of the show that is revealed to the guard at the beginning of the year. The guard also gets custom shirts for their show. Throughout the season, we travel to and perform at different schools. All competitions are on Saturdays. This year, the show is called “From Embers to Ashes” and is themed around the phoenix. Along with the normal set of weapons, they also used folding fans with long yellow and orange fabric attached to it. At the end of the show the phoenix is revealed and uses a set of swing flags that have wings made of fire on them. There are two main divisions in colorguard; KIDA and TIA. The guard placed 9 in KIDA championships and 3 in TIA championships. After talking with the school board, the guard is finally able to go to a large guard competition called Wildwood. This starts on Thursday, May 2 to Sunday, May 5. Throughout Wildwood, groups all over the Atlantic Coast perform and show off their skills.
