Jared Reck is a teacher at Spring Grove High School, as well as an astounding writer. I got to interview him and got to know his character in a new depth. He has written a total of two books that both have been on award lists. When questioned about his greatest achievement he stated: “Professionally, I’m really proud of the two books I’ve had published to this point. Both have been on award lists, including the American Library Association’s Best Books for Young Adults, and it’s still surreal to see them on shelves in bookstores. I hope I’m lucky enough to keep doing it.”
Achievements aside, this quote really captures how down to earth Mr. Reck is.
Another question of his personality followed by his student’s opinions of his character will really encapsulate and truly show off his personality.
“I like to think that I’m kind and funny, but I’m not sure everyone would agree with that. Even though I’m around large groups of people all day long, I’m actually pretty introverted.”
And quotes from his students mirror his intentions.
Ada says, “He’s very nice, and super supportive, funny, and down to earth – encouraging.”
Another student, Lilly, says Mr. Reck is “fun, energetic.”
And Autumn describes him as “funny, and chill, and sarcastic.”
A large audience of people, especially in his class, find him funny, as do I. Reading his quote struck up another question being, “What’s the difference between you as a teacher and you as a writer?”
“Honestly, not very much. I became a writer through teaching–by writing in front of and alongside my students for years. And whether I’m working with 8th graders, high school Juniors, or working-adult graduate students, I try to just share what I know helps me most as a writer.”
He shows a great deal of care for his students which is truly solidified by his attentiveness and dedication to help his students grow. When asked what he’s passionate about, this trait can’t help but shine.
“I love reading and writing, obviously, but I think I’m most passionate about getting students into reading and writing–even (especially) if they’ve never seen themselves that way before.”
I would like to thank Mr. Reck along with the other students for there help in the creation of this piece and there inputs and opinions.
