A dangerous volcano is ready to erupt in Italy, and it’s bigger than Pompeii. Italian citizens and government try to find a way to evacuate this indubitable eruption.
The last time this volcano erupted was the year 1538, about 5 centuries ago.
Over 1,000 minor earthquakes in the last three months started to accumulate around Campi Flegrei, in southern Italy, with the largest reaching a 4.0 magnitude. Similar to the scenario that led to its 1583 eruption.
The Italian government is currently coming up with an evacuation plan. They have to escort over 300,000 people due to the fact that they are nearby this super volcano.
Michael Poland, a geophysicist located at the U.S Geological survey and the scientist in charge of Yellowstone stated that while Campi Flegrei and Long Valley are qualified for huge explosions, the supervolcano moniker can be misleading.
“The first thing people think is that there’s going to be a civilization-ending eruption. You can have an impactful explosion at these places, but the vast majority are smaller eruptions with less explosive lava flows.”
This hasn’t put civilians’ minds at ease though. The government and Italian citizens still seem to be on high alert.
The effects the volcano would have upon eruption are catastrophic. It will have similar effects as the volcano Pompeii but to the world. Other areas on a lesser scale of course but the world would experience over 100ft tsunamis and a prolonged winter lasting about a rough estimate of 10 years – similar to a second ice age.
The land along with crops would face difficulty. What would follow is a mass extinction of the surrounding fauna and flora. Our drinking water, and the air we breathe would as well be tainted by the eruption as well.
