The Phillies are on a revenge tour and it’s starting to show.
The Phillies came into the 2023 postseason the same way they did in 2022. They were the underdog franchise with all offense and little defense. It was an experiment that broke baseball in 2022. The addition of solid power bats such as Nickolas Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh, in the 2022 season drove in the runs for the Phillies.
Star shortstop ,Trea Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, became a free agent at the end of the 2022 season and the Phillies jumped at the gun to sign Turner to an 11 year 300 Million dollar contract.
Philly has not disappointed. With the sweep of the Miami Marlins in the Wild Card, the Phillies showed some potential going into the NLDS. The Phillies rematched the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS coming in as the team projected to lose.
Shockingly, the Phillies took game one, shutting out the Atlanta Braves and also being the only team all of the 2023 season to shut out the Braves. The Phillies lost game two in dramatic fashion to an error made by Bryce Harper running bases. The Phillies then clapped back, winning both game three and game four, the score of game three being 10-2 and game four being 3-1. The Phillies had sent the Braves home for the second year in a row and now it was time for the NLDS against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the NLDS facing the Los Angles Dodgers, which were thought to be a difficult team to face. The Diamondbacks proved that wrong after sweeping the Dodgers in three games. Coming into the NLDS, the Diamondbacks were the visiting team in Philadelphia ,and Philly showed up. Kyle Schwarber launched an absolute moon shot on the first pitch of the night into deep right field. This was then followed by a second run driven in.
The Phillies continued to score one run in each inning until the forth, then followed with another run in the fifth. The Diamondbacks were very quiet with their bats, waiting until the sixth inning to finally score two runs. The game became quiet from the sixth inning on, with the Diamondbacks scoring the final run in the seventh inning.
Game one was over with a score of 5-3, with Philadelphia winning. Philly is looking like series favorites with 3 games left for Philly to win.
With the 2023 World Series right around the corner, and the Phillies on a revenge tour after a devastating loss to the Houston Astros in 2022, people are asking if they can make back to back World Series appearances.
