The Calder Fire in California burned over 200,000 acres of land after reckless arson. This
fire had over 15,000 personnel putting out the fire. The fire damaged over 1,000 structures, and
threatened the tourist sight of Lake Tahoe.
The suspects David Scott Smith, 66, and Travis Shane Smith, 32, are in jail as they are
suspected to have started this fire. The two are accused of “reckless arson” which “caused
inhabited properties to burn and resulted in great bodily injury to multiple victims,” so say the El
Dorado County District Attorney’s office. Both of them are being held on a one million dollar
bail.
Severe drought in California had led this fire to become so big as it took over 200,00
acres of land. The fire started on the western slope of Sierra Nevada before spreading over to the
Lake Tahoe area.
Thousands of people were evacuated and only five people were injured in the fire. No
one has reported to have died from the fire, luckily.
